Youri, suis-tu toujours la Major League Soccer ?
Ce que j’apprécie en ce moment aux États-Unis, c'est qu'il y a chaque année un, voire deux nouveaux clubs. Ça veut dire un vrai terrain de foot, une vraie structure. Seattle et Philadelphie ont amené cette année encore un peu plus de qualité au championnat américain (Philadelphie ne commence finalement qu'en 2010, ndlr). Il y aura Vancouver l’année prochaine (en 2011, ndlr). Tout le monde espère aussi une franchise à Miami. Ce n’est qu’un début. Les Américains veulent une vraie pérennité dans leur championnat. Je pense qu’il y aura encore plus de grands noms. L’histoire de (David) Beckham a beaucoup marqué les gens, mais ça a aussi été belle histoire de marketing pour promouvoir ce football-là . Il y en aura d’autres derrière, c’est sûr.
Estimes-tu qu’il y a eu une amélioration entre tes années MLS et la MLS actuelle ?
Pas vraiment. Il n’y a pas eu une grosse amélioration visible. C’est là aussi où ils sont forts. La Ligue gère tout le football, dont les clubs. Elle ne veut pas de déficits. Il y a des grosses différences de salaires, donc ils gèrent tout. Petit à petit, ils s’améliorent. Ce n’est pas très visible mais ils ont le temps. Leur ligue n’a que douze ans d’existence. Ils ont le temps et piochent les meilleurs exemples un peu partout.
Penses-tu qu’ils ont fait des progrès au niveau de la formation ?
Oui, énormément. Ils misent de plus en plus là -dessus. Quand on regarde en Europe, il y a beaucoup d’investisseurs américains dans les grands clubs: en Angleterre mais aussi en France, avec le PSG. Tout ce qu’ils ont emmagasiné en Europe, ils vont le transmettre aux États-Unis. C’est là où ils vont être plus qu’intéressants.
Que penses-tu du nouveau Français de la MLS, Sébastien Le Toux ?
C’est bien. En plus il joue. C’est assez bizarre. Je dois recevoir un coup de fil par semaine de la part de joueurs motivés pour les États-Unis qui me demandent des conseils. C’est un peu compliqué pour rentrer. C’est pour cela que beaucoup de Français se cassent la figure. Ils pensent que le fait d’avoir joué en France, voire même en Angleterre, ouvre des portes. Mais les Américains fonctionnent différemment. On le voit dans le basket. Il faut se faire un nom. Il y a un circuit un peu compliqué, c’est pour cela qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de Français aux États-Unis. Je pense qu’il y en aura plus l’année prochaine. "Je me suis éclaté aux Etats-Unis" Son parcours atypique n’a donc pas été un frein pour les dirigeants américains ?
Les Américains sont curieux. Quand j’ai joué à New York, ça s’est bien passé. Au départ, ils étaient un peu sceptiques, car j’étais le premier Français, ça remonte à 2005. Même moi j’étais aberré, je pensais qu’il y avait eu d’autres Français. Il n’y a pas eu beaucoup de continuité. Laurent Robert est passé vite fait, Tony Vairelles a fait un essai mais ça ne s’est pas bien passé.
Penses-tu que d’autres Français pourraient l’imiter ?
J’espère ! Tout le monde ne peut pas jouer à New York ou à Los Angeles. Après, reste à savoir si quelqu’un veut aller habiter Seattle ou Salt Lake City. C’est un peu plus difficile. Mais c’est mieux que de moisir en Ligue 2 quand même ?
(Il sourit) Moi je dis oui, car j’y suis allé et je m’y suis éclaté. Après chacun fait son chemin.
Ces joueurs français dont tu parles sont souvent en fin de carrière, non ?
Oui. Le seul problème, c’est que les Américains veulent investir sur du jeune. Ils vont aller à l’encontre de leur politique actuelle, parce qu’avec Beckham ça s’est bien passé côté marketing mais pas sur le terrain. Ils voudraient mettre la même somme mais que ça se passe bien sur le terrain.
Où situerais-tu le niveau de la MLS ?
C’est un bon niveau. Je dirais entre le haut du tableau de la Ligue 2 et le bas du tableau Ligue 1. C’est vrai qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de différence. Les Américains sont très compétitifs dans tout ce qu’ils font.
