 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat. Ce dimanche, le Toronto FC.Un peu d’histoire Le Toronto FC participe au championnat depuis la saison 2007, où il fut la 13e équipe à prendre part à la MLS, et la première équipe canadienne. Son succès populaire hors normes – Toronto est la première équipe de MLS à faire des bénéfices – ouvrit la porte aux autres équipes canadiennes, Vancouver et bientôt Montréal, et contribua à cimenter la MLS dans le paysage footballistique nord-américain. Le stade Le BMO Field, stade de 23 000 places, a été choisi par le Toronto FC et la MLS pour sa taille modeste qui permettrait d’avoir un stade rempli à chaque match du Toronto FC. C’est dans l’optique de favoriser ses deux occupants – le Toronto FC et l’équipe nationale canadienne – que le BMO Field se dota en 2010 d’une surface de jeu naturelle qui remplaça avantageusement la vieillissante surface artificielle. Enceinte hôte d’un jeune club, le BMO Field peut se targuer d’avoir déjà accueilli un All-Star Game, dès 2008, et la MLS Cup en 2010. Les grands joueurs Peu de vrais grands noms sont passés par le Toronto FC. L’idole absolue des fans se nomme Danny Dicchio (2007-2009), attaquant anglais qui vint finir sa carrière à Toronto et tomba amoureux du club et de ses supporters. Il fit un essai concluant au Celtic Glasgow pendant l’hiver mais la MLS refusa de le laisser partir, ce qui le rendit furieux. Mais le soutien des supporters le poussa à rester au club. Parmi les joueurs les plus connus passés au Toronto FC, les Français se rappelleront de Laurent Robert qui fut l’auteur d’une saison 2008 décevante. La même chose peut être dite de l’international espagnol Mista qui ne fit rien pour se faire aimer des exigeants supporters du BMO Field en 2010. Enfin, Maurice Edu, international américain maintenant au Glasgow Rangers, fut drafté par le Toronto FC en 2007 et symbolise les succès du Toronto FC dans la draft. Le palmarès Toronto FC ne s’est pas qualifié pour les playoffs depuis ses débuts en MLS. Toutefois, le club remporta à deux reprises le Canadian Championship, titre honorifique mais qui détermine le club canadien amené à participer à la CONCACAF Champions League, dans laquelle le club ne connut pas non plus de succès, se faisant éliminer en 2009 au tour préliminaire et en 2010 en phase de poules. Bon à savoir… Les fans de Toronto sont parmi les plus fervents du championnat. Ils se distinguèrent en jetant les coussins de siège sur le terrain pour célébrer les buts de leur club et à arroser les tireurs de corners adverses de toutes sortes d’objets, ce qui amena la MLS à réprimander le club et ses supporters. Le club est le seul de MLS à avoir une liste d’attente pour obtenir un abonnement, symbole de la ferveur autour du Toronto FC. Ferveur qui se retrouve dans les larges groupes de supporters faisant les déplacements autour du pays.
