 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat. Ce dimanche, les New York Red Bulls.Un peu d’histoire Né New York/New Jersey MetroStars, selon la volonté de ses propriétaires John Kluge et Stuart Subotnick, également à la tête de la société de médias Metromedia, la franchise était l’une des dix qui composaient la MLS à sa naissance en 1996. Mais elle a changé de nom, pour devenir les MetroStars en 1998 et ce jusqu’en 2006, date du rachat de la franchise par la marque autrichienne de boissons énergétiques RedBull. D’où l’appelation de New York Red Bulls. Le stade Jusqu’à 2010, les New York Red Bulls évoluaient au célèbre Giants Stadium doté de pas moins de 80 000 places et situé à East Rutherford, dans le New Jersey. Mais la franchise possède désormais son propore écrin: la magnifique Red Bull Arena, située à Harrison, toujours dans le New Jersey. Flambant neuve avec ses 25 000 places, l’enceinte accueillera le prochain All Star Game de la MLS, le 27 juillet prochain. Le club possède plusieurs groupes de supporters, comme l’Empire Supporters club (en hommage au nom qu’aurait dû porter la franchise à sa création), la Raging Bull Nation, la Kearny Army ou encore la Hans Backe Viking Army, en hommage à l’actuel coach suédois du club. Les grands joueurs Comme à Los Angeles, les grands joueurs sont nombreux à avoir revêtu le maillot new yorkais. Parmi les plus anciens, l'actuel coach de Cagliari, Roberto Donadoni (1996–1997), le boss de la MLS Alexi Lalas (1998), le portier d’Everton Tim Howard (1998–2003) ou l’ancien Ballon d’Or Lothar Matthäus (2000). Mais aussi les joueurs du cru, style Tony Meola (1996–1998, 2005–2006), Clint Mathis (2000–2003, 2007), Michael Bradley (2004–2005), Jozy Altidore (2006–2008) et Claudio Reyna (2007–2008). Plus récemment, ce sont surtout des étrangers qui ont marqué le club, à l’instar du meilleur buteur de l’histoire, Juan Pablo Angel (2007–2010) et des Français Youri Djorkaeff (2005–2006) et Thierry Henry. Le palmarès Il est vierge ! Incroyable, mais vrai. En quinze ans d’existance, la franchise de New York possède un moins bon palmarès que les Colorado Rapids, le Real Salt Lake ou Columbus Crew. Ce dernier l’a d’ailleurs privé du titre de champion en 2008... New York a également échoué une fois en finale de l’Open Cup, en 2003, face à Chicago. D’où la volonté de la franchise du New Jersey de remédier à cette anomalie, avec les arrivées de Thierry Henry et Rafael Marquez l’été dernier, et celle très probable de Teemu Tainio cette saison. Bon à savoir... Le premier coach du club était Eddie Firmani, bien connu pour avoir dirigé l’ancêtre du New York Cosmos de 1977 à 1979 puis en 1984. Il a été remplacé après huit matches par un certain Carlos Queiroz, futur adjoint de Sir Alex Ferguson à Manchester United et boss de la sélection nationale portugaise. Il a été remplacé en 2007 par Carlos Alberto Parreira, ex-sélectionneur du Brésil et de l'Afrique du Sud. New York a un jumeau autrichien: le Red Bull Salzbourg, anciennement Austria Salzbourg, racheté en 2005 par la marque qui donne des ailes.
