En attendant les signatures de Péguy Luyindula à New York, de Pascal Chimbonda à Chicago et Frédéric Piquionne à Portland – tous trois s’entraînent à 10 jours du début de la saison de MLS -, c’est Mikaël Silvestre qui a ouvert la voie. Jusque là durant ce mercato, d’autres Français avaient étoffé le contingent dans la ligue nord-américaine (Djimi Traoré à Seattle, Kalifa Cissé à New England, Peter Luccin à Dallas), mais ils n’étaient pas des anciens joueurs de l’équipe de France. C’est un Bleu bien expérimenté qui est ravi de poursuivre sa carrière en MLS, le gaucher passé par Manchester United compte 40 sélections, avec 2 Coupes de Confédérations remportées et une présence lors du parcours jusqu’en finale à la Coupe du monde 2006. Portland n’a pu laisser échapper le joueur de 35 ans. Dans le groupe des Timbers dès le début de la présaison, le gaucher a brillé en charnière centrale durant les rencontres de préparation, faisant l’unanimité auprès du staff et des observateurs. Et après quelques jours de latence (avec un essai chez le rival de Seattle en attendant de récupérer une place de nouvel étranger dans l'effectif), Silvestre s’est engagé pour deux années. Arrivé au Werder Brême en 2010 après Arsenal, le formé à Rennes a fait une saison pleine (30 matches) avant d’être inutilisé en 2011–12. Après un essai non concluant à West Ham, il est reparti s’entraîner auprès de Sir Alex Ferguson à MU (où il a passé 10 ans), refusant le salaire important proposé par un club indien (Dodsal) afin de tenter sa chance dans l’inconnu, de l’autre côté des Etats-Unis. Malgré la rémunération limitée qu’offre une franchise de Major League Soccer, Mikaël Silvestre a rapidement fait part de sa grande envie de connaître une nouvelle aventure. "Vraiment excité de rejoindre les Portland Timbers !", s’est-il exclamé sur Twitter. "Mikaël va apporter une expérience et une présence incroyables sur et en dehors du terrain. C’est un joueur de qualité et son impact va solidifier notre défense. Il a fait très bonne impression aux joueurs et au staff durant ses deux semaines d’essai et nous sommes très excites de l’avoir avec nous", a déclaré le coach Caleb Porter, l’entraîneur de la formation de l’Oregon. Et dire que Silvestre pourrait côtoyer toute l’année Piquionne et ainsi se mesurer à un duo Henry-Luyindula lors du match face à New York. Un improbable rêve américain. A lire sur le même sujet:
