Aurélien, dans quel état de forme êtes-vous après votre blessure au dos ?
Je suis revenu il y a deux semaines à l’entraînement et j’ai pu retrouver la compétition le weekend dernier, en entrant en jeu face à Dallas. On a pris le bouillon en fin de match, c’est dommage. Je suis très très content d’être revenu. Je suis très motivé, j’ai toujours envie de prouver ma valeur aux yeux de mes dirigeants, pour les remercier de m’avoir fait venir.
Le Sporting prépare justement un match contre Los Angeles, ce lundi…
Oui, ça va être un gros match à la maison. On aura besoin de prendre des points après notre dernière défaite. On reste sur une bonne série et on a besoin de gagner ce genre de matches pour nous qualifier directement en playoffs. Pour ma part, je vais jouer latéral droit. Le coach a eu cette idée pour ce match et on l’a travaillé. Robbie Keane n’est pas là (en sélection), mais il y a David Beckham et Landon Donovan (libéré par Klinsmann).
Collectivement, la saison de Kansas City a complètement basculé.
Oui, on se retrouve désormais sur le podium de notre conférence après un début raté, où on n’a joué qu’à l’extérieur. Le coach a modifié sa philosophie de jeu. On avait consigne de faire un pressing tout terrain. C’était assez éprouvant et les attaquants perdaient en lucidité. On joue désormais plus bas, tout en conservant notre jeu au sol. En ce qui me concerne, le coach insiste sur le fait de bien relancer.

Comment avez-vous atterri à Kansas City ?
En fait, c'est Marc Zoro, mon coéquipier et ami à Setubal, qui m’a mis en contact avec le coach Vermes. J’ai envoyé mes DVD, ils ont bien aimé et sont venus me voir au Portugal pendant deux matches. Etant donné que je n’étais pas payé, le transfert a pu se réaliser rapidement. Je connais enfin de la stabilité, je peux me concentrer sur le foot. Je n’ai pas eu de vacances ces dernières années, mais je suis tellement content d’être ici, tellement impressionné par la qualité des infrastructures, par l’engouement pour le foot qui devient de plus en plus fort.
Comment justifiez-vous cette carrière à l'étranger ?
J’étais jeune, j’ai manqué de patience et je suis tombé sur des agents un peu pressés de me faire partir. Après le centre de formation de Reims, je n’ai pas eu ma chance en pro, à Amiens et Sedan, alors que je jouais en réserve à 16, 17 ans. J’ai eu l’opportunité d’aller à Majorque. J’y ai joué quelques rencontres de coupes, mais, encore stupide et trop pressé, j’ai découvert l’Ecosse (Gretna). J’ai fait ma première saison, mais le club a déposé bilan. Je suis parti en Grèce (Panserraikos), où j’ai connu des problèmes de paiement, puis j’ai passé quelques mois en Ecosse (Wrexham), avant d’atterrir à Setubal.
A 25 ans, pourquoi avoir choisi un exil si particulier ?
Je suis jeune, j’aurais peut-être aimé poursuivre ma carrière en Europe et m’imposer en Angleterre par exemple. Mais je suis ici depuis bientôt 6 mois et je ne regrette pas ma décision. C’est le meilleur choix de ma vie. La MLS est en train de grandir très vite, avec des joueurs et des clubs médiatisés, énormément de bons joueurs peu connu en Europe et un bon encadrement de la part de la Ligue. Il semblerait que le système des salaires va être modifié, ce qui va donner une autre impulsion au championnat.
Aviez-vous pensé à jouer aux Etats-Unis avant le printemps dernier ?
En fait, oui. Depuis que je suis petit, je rêve des Etats-Unis, notamment par le biais de la musique, du rap. A Sedan, j’avais même été en contact avec une université, qui m’avait proposé tout un cursus scolaire et sportif. C’est un rêve d’enfant qui s’est réalisé. Maintenant que je suis ici, malgré mon jeune âge, je me dis que mon objectif est de devenir l’un des meilleurs défenseurs du championnat. Peut-être que j’aurai l’opportunité de revenir en Europe plus tard par ce moyen.
Après le Portugal, la Grèce et l’Ecosse, des championnats assez moyens, comment jugez-vous le niveau de la MLS ?
C’est différent du Portugal et de la Grèce. Justement, c’est assez semblable à l’Ecosse, mais avec pas mal de particularités. Par exemple, on nous demande de mettre de l’engagement et de courir énormément, que ce soit à l’entraînement ou en match. D’ailleurs, je crois que je n’ai jamais couru autant en match. Malgré tout, on demande aux défenseurs de bien relancer, de trouver les milieux de terrain, de faire des décalages. Tactiquement, il y a encore quelques imperfections, mais les Américains sont tellement perfectionnistes qu’ils vont certainement s’améliorer en trouvant un équilibre. La MLS est vraiment intéressante.

Vous avez rapidement gagné une place de titulaire. Quel bilan faites-vous ?
J’ai travaillé très dur d’entrée et j’ai eu la confiance du coach assez rapidement. Ça commence très bien et, avec ma blessure, j’ai une grosse envie de revenir en forme.
D’autant que vous avez également trouvé le chemin des filets…
Personnellement, c’est toujours très sympa de marquer. J’aimerais encore en planter un ou deux. Mais mon boulot numéro 1, c’est de bien défendre. Après, le coach nous demande d’apporter offensivement, notamment lors des coups de pied arrêtés.
Qu’en est-il de votre adaptation ?
Je suis très ouvert, j’aime parler avec mes coéquipiers. Je pense que je me suis bien intégré au vestiaire. Sinon, cette ville est très agréable à vivre. C’est une grande ville (la zone métropolitaine de Kansas City regroupe 2 millions d’habitants, ndlr). Les gens sont super gentils. Pour la nourriture, il faut payer plus cher pour bien manger. Mais en matière d’adaptation, ça a été d’une grande facilité. J’étais tellement content d’être ici que je m’y suis fait d’entrée.
Quel regard portez-vous sur les autres Frenchies du championnat ?
Quand on se croise sur un terrain, ça se passe très bien. J’ai eu quelques contacts avec Didier Domi (passé par New England). On s’était déjà croisé en Grèce. Quant à Stéphane (Auvray, son ancien coéquipier au Sporting), je suis content pour lui, il a eu une superbe opportunité de jouer à New York. On va se revoir en fin de saison car les Red Bulls se déplacent chez nous.
