 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat. Ce dimanche, les Colorado Rapids.
Un peu d'histoire Fondés en 1996 et, à l'époque, propriété de la firme sportive AEG, les Colorado Rapids sont l'une des dix équipes à avoir formé le premier championnat de MLS. Depuis 2004, la franchise appartient à Stan Kroenke, businessman américain qui détient également les Denver Nuggets (NBA), le Colorado Avalanche (NHL), le Colorado Mammoth (NLL) et les Rams de Saint-Louis (NFL). Il est aussi l'actionnaire majoritaire du célèbre club anglais d’Arsenal. A sa prise de fonction, le club a changé de logo et de couleurs. Le stade Depuis 2007, les Rapids jouent au Dick's Sporting Goods Park de Commerce City, dans la banlieue de Denver. Un stade d’environ 20 000 places entièrement consacré à la pratique du soccer, propriété de Kroenke Sports Entreprises et évalué à 131 millions de dollars. L’affluence est l’une des plus élevées du pays, avec notamment deux groupes de supporters ultras que sont la Pid Army et les Bulldog Supporters Group. Les grands joueurs Plusieurs joueurs américains notables ont porté le maillot tant de fois changé des Rapids. Les internationaux Chris Henderson (1996–1998 et 2002–2005), Marcus Hahnemann (1997–1999), Marcelo Balboa (1996–2001), Robin Fraser (2001–2003) ou Jovan Kirovski (2005–2008). Mais aussi plusieurs étrangers connus, comme le Sud-Africain Shaun Bartlett (1996–1997), Jorge Dely Valdes (1999–2000), frère de Julio, le furtif attaquant du Paris Saint-Germain, le Colombien passé par Montpellier Carlos Valderrama (2001–2002) ou Aitor Karanka (2006), adjoint de José Mourinho au Real Madrid, et Bouna Coundoul (2005–2009), international sénégalais qui garde désormais la cage des New York Red Bulls. Le palmarès En novembre dernier, Colorado a remporté son premier titre, et pas des moindres: le MLS Cup, aux dépens du FC Dallas (2-1 a.p). Les Rapids avaient échoué en finale de la MLS Cup en 1997, face à DC United. Puis rebelote en 1999, en finale de l’Open Cup, face aux Rochester Raging Rhinos (2-0). Bon à savoir Gary Smith, l’actuel coach anglais des Rapids, est un ancien scout d’Arsenal. Julien Baudet est devenu en novembre dernier le premier Français à remporter le titre de champion aux Etats-Unis. Le rival honni des Rapids est le voisin du Real Salt Lake, champion en 2009, un an avant eux. Le club est l’un des rares à ne pas avoir de sponsor sur le devant de son maillot.
